137818 - Thermal Performance Enhancement of Two-Phase Closed Thermosyphon With Sandblasted Evaporator
Abstract:
A two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) is a heat transfer device that effectively transfers heat using the latent heat. It is used in various thermal management fields, such as heat exchangers for waste heat recovery, because it shows high thermal performance despite its simple structure. TPCT absorbs heat through film evaporation and pool boiling in the evaporator and releases heat through condensation of vapor in the condenser. In previous studies, surface modifications (microporous coatings and wet etching) have been applied to the evaporator to improve its heat transfer in the evaporator. The common heat transfer augmentation methods are suitable for lab-scale TPCT experiments but have productivity and economic feasibility limitations in industrial applications such as heat pipe heat exchangers. Sandblasting is a technique that cleans or polishes surfaces by spraying small abrasives with high-pressure air and is widely used in the industrial field. A cavity is formed due to the physical impact of the abrasive hitting the surface, which improves surface wettability and boiling heat transfer performance. Since the time required for surface modification is very short and the equipment is inexpensive, both productivity and economic feasibility are excellent, which makes it very suitable for industrial applications. This study experimentally investigated the thermal performance enhancement in TPCT with a sandblasted evaporator surface. We analyzed the effect of the sandblasted evaporator surface on the heat transfer coefficient at the evaporator and condenser and the thermal resistance of TPCT.
